May 2011 - Update

Despite the gale force winds and torrential rain throughout May we managed to, just about, keep the gardens in check.

Time will tell if our potato crop has been damaged - most of the stalks were snapped by the high winds.

That said, the rest of the crops are coming along nicely and we look set to have a bumper crop of strawberries and black currants.

Our new trees and young saplings are recovering well also after their unfortunate 'run in' with the grass cutters and our pots are beginning to transform from a profusion of 'bulbs' to bedding plants.

Sadly 'Bernie' our Eco Buddy and our 'Tin Man' in the sensory garden suffered an attack from mindless vandals but thankfully they did little harm to our new flower beds.

We remain very proud of our achievements and progression of skills and look forward to taking part, through out the summer, in a national 'Tomato Trial' of three varieties namely, Conchita, Dasher and Elegance along with our own Gardeners' Delight.

April 2011 Update

Since returning from 'Spring Break' we have been running the Gardening Club on both Tuesday & Thursday nights.

We now have 3 new parent helpers and members from classes P4-P7.

We have been able to gets lots done but as ever, especially at this time of year, there is always lots to be done.

We are delighted with our Re-Cycled Plastic Bottle Greenhouse and it has been bursting full of our seedlings, potted on plants and our new Grape Vine and will soon be boasting our competition tomatoes and cucumbers.

We have had no funds since last summer but have been very resourceful with our 'Freebies' - prizes from Generation Green, RHS, Morrisons vouchers and the Potato Council aswell as saving plants and seeds from last year.

We are working hard to extend our skills and feel very accomplished at sowing, potting on, planting out and of course nurturing and tending.

We now have a distinct Orchard Area, Soft Fruit Bed, Salad Bed, Herb Planters, Rhubard Bed, Asparagus Bed, a bed for our pumpkins, courgettes and squashes, aswell as onion sets, carrots and pea planters.

The school class beds are almost all full now both in the veg nursery, with distinct rotational crop beds, and in the Flower garden area.

Photos will be updated soon showing our great progress in this great weather and watch the main site home page for our soon to be announced Open Evening.

Happy Gardening!

xxxxxxxxxx
